Contesting Infrastructural Futures: 5G Opposition as a Technological Drama

This paper addresses the public contestation of rollout fifth generation mobile telecommunications networks (5G) in Netherlands. Drawing on Pfaffenberger’s framework technological dramas, we analyze variety symbolic expressions about 5G made documents published by “design constituencies” leading technology’s implementation, “ambivalent intermediaries” reporting 5G’s implementation and its emerging controversial status news, “impact who organize Facebook to oppose against 5G. The analysis describes a publicly performed narratives activities that build meanings supposed need for 5G, imaginaries futures, scientifically manageable responsible innovation. demonstrates how drama is constituted tensions between different interpretations these meanings. However, amidst drama, futures are temporarily suspended, constraining stage opposition enforcing partial closure conflict.
